Croatian (Hrvatski) is a South Slavic language spoken chiefly by Croats in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring countries, as well as by the Croatian diaspora worldwide.
Croatian is written in Gaj's Latin alphabet. There are three principal dialects: Shtokavian, Chakavian, and Kajkavian. The literary and standard language is based on Shtokavian, which is also the basis of Standard Serbian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. These are commonly subsumed under the term Serbo-Croatian in English, though this term carries negative historical connotations for many Croats.
